The sages ruled through an understanding of the ultimate authority of the universe, T’ien, and thus could properly be called T’ien-tzu, or “Son of Heaven.” They were said to rule under the authority of T’ien ming, the “Mandate of Heaven. following Heaven’s Authority.

feelings of others and to express one’s own concern for any plight
or misfortune that might befall them.
Filial Piety. At the heart of the notion of filial piety is the idea that one’s body is a gift from one’s parents and, for this reason, should be harmed as little as possible.
